My Great Predecessor : Philidor, Francois Andre Danician

Did you know Philidor has an opening, a checkmate pattern, and an ending position named after him?

MY GREAT PREDECESSORS SERIES:
In this series, we will be covering top chess players throughout history!

André Danican Philidor (1726-1795)

Philidor was born in 1726 in Dreux, France. He is regarded as the best chess player of his age; his book Analyse du jeu des Échecs was considered a standard chess manual for at least a century.

Although no recorded games from Philidor’s prime years (by 1780 he was 53 years old) and very few games overall survived, he left an indelible mark on chess thanks to his book and the strategies outlined in it.
